Visa Information

All foreign students that are going to study in Chile for one academic semester or more must obtain a valid student visa. This visa doesn’t allow doing any remunerated activity.

There are two ways to apply to a student visa: either through the Chilean Consulate in the origin country; or apply for it in Chile at the Foreign Department of the Government.

1. - Via the Chilean Consulate in the student’s home country.

In order to obtain a student visa, the students must apply personally through the nearest Chilean Consulate(http://www.minrel.cl/pages/misiones/index.html). The following original documents will be requested (requirements may vary according to the country of residence):

  • Valid passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Letter or Certificate accepting to one of the programs at Universidad Diego Portales.
  • Certificate demonstrating the sufficient financial means to live in Chile, either from a guardian, and/or a student loan or scholarship award.
  • Medical certificate. Forms are available at the Chilean Consulate.
  • Police Certificate from their country of residence, for those students over 18 years of age. Forms are available at the Chilean Consulate.
  • Three (3) passport-sized photographs.

The visa is valid for one year and once it expires, it remains valid for entering to Chile within the following 90 days. Student visas may be renewed in Chile. Permission to work in Chile is not granted with this type of visa, except in special cases.

For “visa registration” purposes (called “stamping the visa”), all students who have previously carried out all the procedures in their country of origin must proceed by the following two steps:

a. - Students have 30 days from the date of their arrival in Chile to carry out the procedure of visa registration (“stamping their visa”) at the Headquarters of the Department of Immigration and Customs (Jefatura de Extranjería y Policía Internacional).

Address: Avenida Borgoño 1052, Santiago Centro, Santiago.
(Office: Avenida Independencia, 1st intersection on the left-hand side)
Hours of attention: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The student must go with the following documents:
  • Passport with corresponding stamping.
  • 1 color photograph (with the passport number and the name included in the photograph)
  • Forms delivered to the student at the Chilean Consulate (where applicable).
  • Completed form to be handed in this office with a payment of $800 Chilean pesos. This application form is given at the same department.

b.- At the Department of Immigration and Customs (Jefatura de Extranjería y Policía Internacional) it will be given to the student a “Certificate of Visa Registration” which must be presented at the Civil Registration and Identification Service (Servicio Registro Civil e Identificación) in order to obtain an Identity Card.

Address: Huerfanos 1570, Santiago Centro, Santiago, Chile
Hours of attention: 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The student must have:
  • Passport plus one photocopy of the passport
  • Original Certificate of Visa Registration given by the Department of Immigration and Customs plus one photocopy.
  • $4000 Chilean pesos tax payable to obtain the Identity Card with a photograph.
  • The student must return after 15 working days to obtain the Identity Card.
